The Nigeria Police Force has designed a system to register all vehicles plying Nigerian roads in a Central Motor Registry (CMR) called Central Motor Registry Information System (CMRIS).
This according to the Nigeria Police is one of the duties of the Force to ascertain the ownership of every vehicle especially at times of vehicle theft and to protect the lives and property of all persons in Nigeria. This is part of the innovations brought by the President Tinubu led Government.
In carrying out this responsibility, the NPF demands that every motor vehicle (cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles, etc.) owner to register the motor vehicle in the Registry after which it will be issued a Motor Vehicle Information Certificate.
A designated website portal has been designed to enable motor vehicle owners comply with this compulsory regulatory requirement by providing information online about their vehicles, its ownership and other necessary details that will support the Police in maintaining information on vehicles.
Though this might have come as a surprise to most motorist, many believe that the initiative if effectively implemented will go a long way to help in the investigation of motor vehicle theft and recovery processes. And from all indication the Force is prepared to enforce this to the latter.
Cost of Registration
The Police Central Motor Registry Information System (CMRIS) costs N5,000 to be renewed every year. But the penalty of not doing it if a vehicle is caught without it could amount to N40,000. That is losing 40k for something that would have been done with not more than 6k.
So, If you have not done yours, it takes about 20 minutes to do it online with the following information: your NIN, email address, phone number, vehicle registration number, the chassis number, the engine number, the vehicle color, year of manufacture, model, make of the vehicle etc.
Just go to NPF CMRIS website https://cmris.npf.gov.ng and follow the instructions to create a profile and make payment. The certificate will be sent to the email you provided. Then go to a business center and print out a copy.
The breakdown of the cost is as follows: Fee – N5,000.00, VAT – N375.00, bank charges – N190.00, printing about N200.00, total cost about N6,000.00. The beauty of it is that you can do it at the comfort of your home any time any day. Don’t fall a victim and spend unnecessarily.
Do it now or meet someone who can do it to help you out. If you go to licensing office or police stations to do it, they collect as much as between 15k to 20k. Where Police demand for this is where they know that you do not have a choice (very lonely place and they know that you are at their mercy) other than to part with your hard-earned money. If you claim ignorance, they have a copy to show you there.
